Career Insights from a Real Family Law Attorney

Career Insights from a Real Family Law AttorneyCareer Insights from a Real Family Law AttorneyA law attorneywith the Pittsburgh law firm ofRaphael Ramsden Behers, P.C., provides candid insight into the challenging practice of family law. If youre interested in this area of the law, read on for insights into what its like to be a family lawyer What Is Family Law? Family law is a practice area that encompasses the many legal issues that families may face. These issues include DivorceSpousal supportChild supportCustodyDivision of asplatzsets and liabilities due to divorceAdoptionTermination of parental rightsPaternityDependency and child neglectProtection from abuse What Do You Like About Practicing in the Area of Family Law? In family law, you can be more than a lawyer assessing and advising a client on his or her legal rights. You can help an individual through one of the most stressful experiences in life. It is very rewarding to know youve helped someone through such a diff icult time. What Are the Challenges of Practicing Family Law? While rewarding, it can also be quite difficult to go through these events with your clients. The biggest challenge for me is when one or both parties are set on making the process as difficult as possible in a self-defeating attempt to hurt the other party. Describe a Typical Day or Typical Tasks You Perform as a Family Lawyer There are no typical tasks- maybe something else I like and hate about the practice. Each day brings a new issue from one of my clients that must be resolved, from a missed custody exchange to a dispute about how to handle custody over a holiday to one party taking money out of a joint account. New issues arise daily. It can make getting through your to-do list quite challenging. Generally, I spend my day returning phone calls, negotiating small issues, drafting correspondence, preparing pleadings for court, and going to court for hearings and motions. In family law, you spend a fair amount of time in court for hearings ranging from ten minutes to two hours in length. Occasionally you have trials that can last several days. Are Employment Opportunities in the Field of Family Law Growing? I would say, unfortunately, yes, for two reasons. One, more people are getting divorced. The other reason is that it is difficult to stay in this field, so there is a decent amount of turn over. It takes a certain type of attorney to practice primarily family law. What Skills Are Needed to Practice in the Area of Family Law? Family law attorneys must possess the skills of a litigator and negotiator. Time management skills are a must as well, as the practice of law in the family area is very driven by interruption. It is very helpful to developcounseling skills,as you will be dealing with people going through a very emotional time in their lives. A basic understanding of accounting and financial matters are a must to both advise your client and to present financial issues to th e court. People skills are important, particularly oral communication. You are constantly in contact with people whether it be your client, opposing counsel, or court personnel, there is always someone with whom you need to effectively communicate. How Can Someone Break into Family Law? Take courses inlaw schoolin family law and intern at organizations such as Kids Voice and Family Legal Services. Be persistent. If you cant find anything right away, try again. What Are the Latest Trends in Family Law? Collaborative Law is a structured process that provides divorcing parties and parties involved in other family law disputes an alternative to litigation. Although developed over 17 years ago, it has yet to reach all areas of the country. Collaborative Law allows the parties to keep control of their destiny by hiring attorneys committed to a process of including the parties, by use of group meetings, in all negotiations and discussions in a collaborative effort to resolve the ma tter without going to court. The Collaborative Law attorneys agree not to represent the parties in court should either party decide to litigate their differences. This process has successfully achieved satisfactory results for divorcing parties and is much less stressful for the attorney.

Bragging too much on your resume can ruin your chances of landing a job

Bragging too much on your resume can ruin your chances of landing a jobBragging too much on your resume can ruin your chances of landing a jobResumes and titel letters are often the first impression an employer has of you. In our effort to make the best impression possible, we sometimes embellish our accomplishments. Our ability to deliver on deadlines becomes unparalleled. Our skills with new technologies become top-tier and superior.A new studyfrom behavioral scientists at the University of Michigan found that how we brag about ourselves on cover letters and resumes can influence a hiring managers decision. Self-promotional language works to make us seem more competent and capable - up to a point.Analyzing 60 real resumes and cover letters for a university staff position, the researchers found that our bragging can be broken down into different categories with varying levels of intensities Crediting external sources welches seen as the mildest form of self-promotion, and using sup erlatives such as beyond compare was seen as the most extreme use of impression management. In between those two poles are statements such as, I tripled my products reach.Medium forms of self-promotional bragging were found to be effective at influencing an evaluators perception of a candidates fit for the job. But when resumes were intensely self-promotional - the candidate said they were exceptional, superb, and outstanding - evaluators were less likely to see the job applicant as a good organizational fit. What kind of braggarts hiring managers need to watch out forThis study shows that we can be manipulated by flowery language into believing competence that may not be there. For managers, Id caution them to focus on credentials and qualifications that can be verified over those that cannot, the studys co-author Marie Waung told Ladders. But that doesnt mean that we should never use impression management at work, just that we should be cautious about what we choose to believe. Th ere is nothing inherently negative about impression management. The problem occurs when it crosses the line into exaggerating ones experiences and qualifications with some job applicants/candidates even going as far as to engage in outright lies, or when its use blurs the hiring mangers ability to choose the most qualified applicant, Waung said. What job applicants should not say in their resumesAs long as there are jobs to fill, employees will continue to be highly motivated to sell their accomplishments. Thats not a bad thing. Waungs advice to employees is to ground your self-promotion in confidence in your abilities, not false bravado.Dont lie on your resume. Do put your best foot forward.Being confident is a good quality in an employee, whereas being a braggart is not, she told Ladders. The key to self-promotion is to do so in a low-key way. For example, describing yourself as an expert, as superior, or as an ideal applicant in a cover letter may go a bit too far. However, using adjectives such as creative, conscientious, energetic, results-oriented, etc. may convey ones qualifications without giving the impression of arrogance.Moderation is keyThe study shows us that the best bragging is done in moderation. When you brag too hard about yourself, you come off as less likable. Selling the story of your career with good manners and gratitude - key elements of ingratiation tactics - could be the important step needed to get your resume past the slush pile.Bottom line if you are going to use self-promotion tactics be sure to also use ingratiation tactics to balance them out, Waung said. If you are going to brag, do so in a way that people will still think that you are nice.

10 Skills to Transition from Engineering to Project Management 10 Skills to Transition from Engineering to Project Management 10 Skills to Transition from Engineering to Project ManagementOne of the advantages of an engineering degree is that its flexible. Theres a lot more you can do with your degree and experience than the hands-on problem solving that youre probably used to.And you dont even need to give up the STEM aspects of the job.Higher-level, more hands-off positions such as project management provide engineers with the opportunity to continue working directly on engineering projects while gaining new skills and, most importantly, offering you the chance to move up in your field. What Is Project Management?A project manager is responsible for the planning, oversight, and completion of a project, overseeing workers, the schedule, and the overall budget. They work on engineering projects, as well as software, IT, construction, and a wide variety of other large-scale projects.Th is is a vital role for any project. Without proper planning and execution, a given project could get held up by any unexpected problem, which could cause a serious hit to the projects overall efficiency or even lead to project failure. For You Artificial Intelligence Transforms Manufacturing Even though the job involves planning and oversight, a lot of problem solving is still involved in project management. A project manager is also responsible for process development, which means youll be solving the biggest problem of all How to ensure each project is completed in the most streamlined, efficient way possible. Its also the responsibility of the project manager to conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans to make sure there is a solution to every potential problem, so that the projects dont experience any unnecessary delays or expenses. What are the skills required for project management?Project management is no easy task. In addition to great analytical skills, proje ct managers must have strong people skills. After all, itll be your job to manage and interact with a wide variety of people every day, such as the clients, bosses, engineers, and crews youll be overseeing.Terry Suffredini, PE, an engineering-focused career coach, says these are some of the most important skills to develop if you want to be a project managerEffective listeningUnderstanding and working collaboratively with different personality stylesMotivating your team membersDiplomacy and conflict resolution between competing interestsFlexibilityAvailabilityto your clients and your team members, even after modell work hoursManagement of time and resourcesUnderstanding how to budget and control costsSchedule maintenanceBeing both a strong leader of your team and crew and a strong follower of your own managers and clientsAdding these to your analytical skill will help you with more than just a project management position. While the median salary for mechanical engineers in the United States is $124,000 according to a recent ASME survey, the median income for project managers can often be well above this amount. As a project manager, there also tend to be more career opportunities with a wider variety, which means less chance of getting bored as you progress through your career. But higher compensation often comes at a price. Theres just a lot thats involved, Suffredini says.A Changing FieldThe project management career path has changed quite a bit over the past 10 years, becoming much more client-centric and focused on the big picture. It has become increasingly important to focus on giving the client a good experience. Competition is fierce and clients are looking for value for their dollars.Terry Suffredini, engineering career strategistIt has become increasingly important to focus on giving the client a good experience, Suffredini says, explaining that this has become especially true in the wake of the downturn in the oil and gas industry. Competition is fierce and clients are looking for value for their dollars. As such, its become all the more important for engineering firms to stay on schedule and on budget, while bearing the clients preferences in mind. Project managers need to be responsive and view the proje ct from the clients perspective in order to help meet the clients needs and goals as efficiently as possible.A person with excellent technical skills does not always make the best manager, and thats OK technical experts will always be needed. An engineering project cant be completed without the engineer, after all.But if youre ready for new responsibilities, want to hone your people skills, and are looking for an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, then project management might be the right step to take you in that direction.Tim Sprinkle is an independent author.Read more from ASME.orgEnergy Storage Smooths the Duck CurveHandheld Dronut Brings Drones IndoorsUltrasound Patch Monitors Critical Components For Further Discussion
